PROGRAMMATIC DISTANCING

The Covid-19 pandemic has radically altered the way in which we think about our cities and the tasks which we are routinely accustomed to performing in them. This transformation has specifically brought attention to the public sphere of the workplace and has put in scrutiny its dependence on a physical domain. As Millions of people worldwide were confined through stay at home orders the workplace for many became and still has become a technological domain which does not rely on a physical workplace. This forced condition has brought many companies worldwide to realize the monetary and functional benefits of a work from home model. This realization marks a paradigmatic shift which will potentially outlive the pandemic and which has already solidified its transformation in the entertainment and commerce industries of the world. However, regardless of the undeniable benefits of a virtual portal controlling the routine activities of our day to day lives, this virtual existence has taken away the immense variety and stimulating facets of city and suburban life. This monotonous and unstimulating environment can without change lead to inefficiency and potentially to adverse psychological conditions. Therefore, If now the majority of a typical day is spent at home occupying one or more pieces of furniture then within this paradigm the furniture has become the occupiable program and all other area surrounding the furniture have become circulation and common areas. The Boring house proposes to take this excess area which under the premise of a pandemic and work from home model are now useless and reorganize them into a mazelike circulation which is enclosed by walls with built in furniture. Essentially, if furniture now is the program and this is combined with an excess of circulation then the house now has more program. This added program transforms the home into a micro furniture based city and offers new and varied ways to perform the otherwise routine and boring tasks which would otherwise take place in a single piece of furniture. By doing so the boring house becomes exciting and reintroduces the element of variety and choice which is missing in most work from home environments.
