IN-BETWEEN, Below & Around
The Myvatn region in the north of Iceland is one of the fourth largest lake and volcano regions in the country. Located in this region; on the east coast of lake Myvatn to be exact, is the Vogafjos farm resort. Most notable of the resort is the Cafe which is distinctive for offering their guests an "up close and personal" experience of how the ingredients in their menu are farmed, prepared, and served. Following this successful model the resort is seeking to expand their operation and construct a new 5,000 SF greenhouse, a restaurant and multi-purpose space with the possibility of being built in two phases. Following this behind-the-scenes mode of operation the proposal for this greenhouse restaurant takes the program and organizes it in such way that it creates and combines three different spatial conditions which equally showcase and integrate the visitors experience with the greenhouse farming process. The first places the visitor areas between the greenhouse, the second places it under, while the entire building circulation is organized to weave around, peek into and discover the greenhouse space. This organization is negotiated through the interweaving of two visibily distinct enclosures which through their materiality respond to the lighting, visual and climate needs of the respective spaces. This duality of enclosure from afar creates the appearance of a mysterious mass which hovers over and blends with the landscape.
